[Diese] Veröffentlichung ist [...] so etwas, wie das österreichische "Chinese Democracy", wenngleich die Wartezeit von ungefähr zwei Jahren doch deutlich unter derjenigen auf das aktuelle Guns'N'Roses-Machwerk gelegen ist. Dafür ist "Supernova 2" aber auch – wohl wenig überraschend – musikalisch anspruchsvoller geraten, als der eben herbeizitierte Vergleich. Bulbul, Merzbow, Peach Pit und Wolfgang Fuchs haben für diese Doppel-10"-Platte jeweils eine Seite zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, die sie ganz nach ihren Vorstellungen füllen konnten.
Von Bulbul gibt es diesmal in Zusammenarbeit mit Heimo Wallner ein Ambient-Stück namens "Grand Kratzscha", das stilistisch kaum etwas mit den vergleichsweise straighten (natürlich im Bulbul-Kosmos) Rockstücken der letzten Platte gemein hat. Vielmehr erzeugen Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Elektronikflächen Klanggebilde, in die man sich erstmal einfinden muss – zum einfach mal so nebenher Hören also wohl nicht wirklich passend. Dies trifft dann noch mehr auf den Beitrag von Merzbow zu, bekannterweise japanischer Extrem-Noise-Musiker. Entweder man hasst oder liebt ihn – dazwischen gibt es nichts. Für die einen ist es, gleich nach der Erfindung der Schallwellen, das Beste überhaupt, für die anderen einfach bloß der Klang eines Massenauffahr-Unfalls auf der Autobahn, während nebenan ein Bagger in einer riesigen Lego-Kiste schaufelt.

Auf Seite drei findet sich dann mit den drei, an Slint erinnernden, Stücken des kroatischen Post-Rock Quartetts Peach Pit wohl der zugänglichste Beitrag auf Supernova 2, der den Ohren kurzfristig etwas Entspannung bietet, bevor es zum Abschluss mit den beiden Beiträgen des österreichischen Elektronik-Musikers Wolfang Fuchs noch einmal abstrakter wird. Genau genommen, gibt es wohl Weniges, das noch abstrakter wäre, als knapp fünf Minuten lang das Auslaufgeräusch einer Plattennadel auf Tonträger zu verewigen, wie im ersten Teil des Beitrages geschehen. Aber keine Angst, es bleibt nicht immer so.
Anarchische Allianzen, wohin das Auge reicht, die Nase riecht, das Ohr sich weitet. Allianz #1 dieser prächtigen 10“-Platte: Bulbul und Tumido, die beiden hinreißendendsten experimentellen Rockbands des Planeten OÖ. Allianz #2: das Zusammenwirken der vertrauenswürdigstens Plattenlabels in der erfolgreichen Überwindung des kapitalistischen Misstrauens und des Verdrängungswettbewerbs: Rock is Hell, Interstellar und Trost, deren Triebfedern in den drei Stücktiteln namhaft gemacht werden: Summer, Herbst und Winter, nein, Drobil. Allianz #3: die Verflechtung mit dem sympathischsten Kunstnetzwerk des Hotels Pupik auf Sankt Schrattenberg: Stammgästin Nana Schulz hat das Cover gestaltet, Basismonarch Heimo Wallner hat es gedruckt. "Drobil" wurde ebendort aufgenommen, "Summer" und "Herbst" beim artacts-Festival im Tiroler St. Johann. Damit es zu keinen Verwechslungen kommt: Praktiziert wird hier das genau Gegenteil von Freunderlwirtschaft: ein Anarcho-Syndikat, geformt von guten Freunden. Und es rockt wie die Hölle. The might of Bulbul has been described on various places in these pages and so has the might of Tumido. Also the power those two have been known to unleash togetheron stage has been described in detail (including KK Null). And in spite of all the words put down in praise of them and all the moments and ideas shared with them in real life, it is never enough. Mostly because there is always something new, refreshing and original coming from these artists. And also suprising. Bulbul-fans love suprises and they never get disappointed.
Anyway, this 10" release in cooperation on the three coolest noise rock labels in Austria portrays an aspect of Bulbultumido that has been left a little unnoticed, their free improvisational side. Both bands, Bulbul and Tumido, are well known for being able to lay down a tight, stomping noise rock cruncher, that moves along like a mighty steam engine and that is what people like about them most when they see them play alongside The Melvins, Melt Banana or any other of the hundreds of bands that they have shared a stage with. The other thing that people know about them, though probably more about Bulbul, maybe because they have been around longer, is that they like to do things that seem weird or off beat at first sight (like field recording or cooperations with Carla Bozulich or the ongoing series of concerts named Fitze Fatze and on and on).
But that they are actually great improvisers on top, able to produce interesting and encompassing music with nothing but a few guidelines spoken about beforehand is rarely in the foreground. Me, for instance, I never got around to review those Bulbul rehearsal room tapes with all kinds of freaky stuff on them, and now my tape player has broken down and I never got around to buy a new one. Different shit, same old story.
Didi Kern, the drummer of Bulbul (and other famous Austrian underground bands) once told me about the virtues of free improvisation, which I don’t remember in full, but it came down to two things: first, it can be the greatest thing to do as a musician. Second, you never know how it is gonna work out. Sometimes the improviser has the feeling the session was great but listening to the tapes it turns out daft. Other times the feeling after the session is less euphoric, but the recordings are great. Which probably has got something to do with the inherent rules of fixed media versus live experience. And the third, and probably most important thing is, that the only rule to judge improvisation by, is by emotion.
On "summer, herbst & drobil" you’ll find three tracks of intersting, dynamic and challenging instrumental music, that keeps away from steady rhythms and song structures but dives deeply into the subconscious of scraped strings, clattering drums and atmospheric feedback. On one point they have worked themselves up so much, they fall into an impressive wall of noise sound, which may be the hightlight of the small record to most people. Mostly, though, it is the irregular clutter of the psyche working at free range speed.
The crazy humour of these guys shines through more in the outer concept of the record. Like naming the three tracks on the 10inch after the last names of the three people running the three labels that this record appears on. Limited to 300 pieces, whereby every label recieves 100 pieces to distribute. There is a structure showing up here, right? Which, by the way, is the secret of free improvisation, that no matter how much the artist tries to dive into the subconscious and stay out of regularity and repeating himself, the human brain always tries to find regularity and structure.

Zuerst zu zwei Bands, die eigentlich mehr schon von Wien aus agieren. Die gemeinsame 10" von Bulbul und Tumido löst in einem ein Gefühl aus, das auch ein 16-jähriger Fan von Slipknot haben könnte, wenn er sich in seiner allgemeinen Musikeuphorie erstmals ein Album von Sigur Ros oder Radiohead besorgt (bestenfalls natürlich kauft): „Kommt da noch was?“ Würde man in Österreich mit Noiserock richtig Geld verdienen, dann wäre diese 10" (schon allein vom Tonträger her) eine Verweigerungsplatte. Die letzten Releases - "The Orgy" von Tumido und "6" von Bulbul - waren trotz aller extravaganten Details doch Rockmusik mit eingängigen Momenten. Und vor allem ziemlich gut. "Summer", "Herbst" und "Drobil" sind nun aber Improvisationsmusik, die Richtung postrockiger Avantgarde tendiert. Bedient werden aber eigentlich weder das Bedürfnis nach Post Rock der Marke Mogwai, noch die Sehnsüchte nach Eruptionen von Sunno))) oder Neurosis – was natürlich die Krücke "postrockige Avantgarde" wieder relativ schlecht dastehen lässt. Zuhören gibt es vor allem Percussion und, äehm, Geräusche. Was bleibt ist eine Platte für Komplettisten, die vor allem die "süßen" oben erwähnten Momente im Schaffen der Protagonisten noch "süßer" werden lässt.

Die Exil-Wiener Bulbul sind die beste Noise-Rock Band des Landes und das Duo Tumido aus Linz steht ihnen in nicht viel nach. Gemeinsam ergeben sie ein experimentelles, innovatives, groovendes Monsterorchester, welches auf CD zwar nicht ganz seine Live-Gewalt erreicht, aber immer noch ein herausstechendes, heimisches Release in dem Genre darstellt! Top!
